Dabei ist Dick ein echter Widerling! Kein Trick ist ihm zu schmutzig und keine Falle zu faltif, um den Sieg beim verrückten Wacky Race davonzutragen. Naja, Scahdenfreude war ja immer schon die schönste Freude, zwängen wir uns also hinter das Steuer von Dicks Bösomobil...

Horizontal (und ein wenig vertikal) scrollt die Straße vorbei, über Lücken in der Fahrbahn wird gehüpft, und mit einem eingebauten Frontal-Piekser schaufelt man gegnerische Autos, Karnickel und sonstige Hindernisse zur Seite. Das Fahrzeug verkraftet einige Feindberührungen, sechs Leben und zwei Continues gehören zur Grundausstattung.

Allzu schwer ist die Raserei somit nicht, allerdings ist die Routenwahl von Bedeutung, will man nicht überholt werden oder zeitraubend per Rückwärtsgang aus einer Sackgasse manövrieren. Wer unter den ersten fünf ins Ziel rauscht, darf in einer Plattformsequenz eine Falle für die nachfolgenden Fahrer bauen; dann geht es mit neuer Optik wieder von vorne los, insgesamt sechs Level lang.

Zugegeben, der Spielablauf ist wenig originell, die Grafik hingegen schon: Zwar ist der Bildausschnitt etwas klein geraten, aber das tut weder dem blitzsauberen Scrolling noch den witzigen Animationen vor bunten Hintergründen einen Abbruch. Dazu gibt es prima Soundeffekte und schwungvolle Musik, letztere jedoch im Titelbild.

Wacky Races ist ein nettes Programm für "den kleinen Hunger zwischendurch" - und das zu einem entsprechend fairen Preis! (rl)

It seems to me that life was a good deal happier when the likes of Penelope Pitstop, the Ant Hill Mob, Dastardly and Mutthley, Peter Perfect, the spooky family, the, um, cavemen, and (oh dear) other ones I have forgotten graced our tea-time TV screens.

For those who are too young or culturally closeted to remember, Wacky Races was (and still is) a classic Hanna Barbera cartoon, based loosely on Sixties comedy race films like Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (but with cars). And it was fab.

Great news, then, that Hi-Tec - who have worked their way through Top Cat, Hong Kong Phooey and the like - have finally got round to turning Wacky Races into a pleasingly simple comedy driving game I which you, as dastardly Dick, have to out0wit and out-drive your bizarre opponents by either a) going faster than them or b) (and better) sabotaging their route.

Unpleasantness involves setting up simple traps in the way of the other cars (which takes place in a little platform sub game) or merely shoving them off the road using an unreliable spike which pops out the front of the Dickmobile. Even taking into account these complications, it is fairly simple two-dimensional stuff, though colourfully presented and with a fairly catchy line in addictive gameplay.

Kids stuff perhaps, and not quite up there with the best of original budgie release, but it is good fun for a while, and - hurrah! - it has got all those great Wacky Races characters in it.
