Narc Nice Amiable Reliable Coppres it does not stand for! Mr Big is the head of an international crime syndicate and the Narc boys are out to get them. Based on the frantic coin-op, this is a two-player horizontally-scrolling blast.

The team scoots around the screen, arresting and shooting Big’s boys and dogs, fighting through level after level of serious violence. The graphics are functional, but not inspirational and the gameplay follows the lines of the coin-op, relying on the number of foes to keep the pace up. It makes for an instantly exciting game, but as with many coin-op conversion, it loses this edge after a few hours continuous play.

Die Hintergrundstory könnte man sich eigentlich mal wieder sparen, denn bei blutrünstigen Automatenumsetzung geht es im Prinzip nur um eins – alles töten, was sich auf dem Screen bewegt! Aber sei es drum, hier ist die packende Geschichte von Hit Man und Max Force: Die beiden sind zwei Cops im Stil der bekannten Edelbullen aus Miami Vice und stehen in Diensten der D.E.A. (Drug Enforcement Agency – keine Tankstelle!). Dort hat man festgestellt, daß die Drogenbekämpfung viel schneller geht, wenn man die Dealer gleich erschießt anstatt sie umständlich zu verhaften. Deshalb haben sich die Jungs mit netten kleinen Maschinenpistolen ausgerüstet, die praktischerweise auch zum Abschießen von Raketen geeignet sind. Außerdem tragen sie Motorradhelme, um ihren hübschen Kopf zu schützen – man weiß ja schließlich nie, ob man den nicht doch mal brauchen kann.

So ausgestattet geht es dann in über zehn Level (inc. Unterlevel) von einer „Festnahme“ zur nächsten, bis am Ende der Obermotz Mr Big zum großen Showdown antritt. Schnappt man einen der Gangster lebend, gibt es Bonuspunkte, erledigt man sie gleich richtig, darf man ihre Hinterlassenschaften aufsammeln: Patronen, Drogen, Geld und vor allem die besonders effektiven Raketen (die Dinger reißen den Gegner wortwörtlich in Stücke – sieht noch schlimmer aus als bei „Altered Beast“)! Bei den Feinden hat man sich einiges einfallen lassen, neben Rauschgifthändlern in allen Varianten gibt es noch Hubschrauber, Hunde und sogar riesige Käfer – die sind wahrscheinlich durch übermäßigen Drogenkonsum so groß geworden... Auch die einzelnen Level sind sehr abwechslungsreich gestaltet, die Palette reicht von der tristen Vorstadtstraße über die U-Bahn und ein Gewächshaus bis hin zu Mr. Big’s chicem Büro.

Grafisch ist die Gangsterjagd sehr hübsch geworden; mit Zwischenbildern, die effektvoll eingeblendet werden, und einem Horizontalscrolling, das kaum bis gar nicht ruckelt. Noch besser sieht es beim Sound aus, hier gibt es anständige Musik und astreine Effekte plus Sprachausgabe. Die Steuerung ist einfach zu bedienen, hat aber ihre Macken: Manche Gegner (z.B. Hunde und Rollstuhlfahrer) lassen sich nur im Knien erledigen, dabei wirkt es oft sehr störend, daß die Helden sich nach jedem Treffer automatisch wieder zu voller Größe aufrichten. Dieses Manko wird aber mehr als ausgeglichen durch den hervorragenden Zwei-Spieler-Simultanmodus und ein nützliches Radar, das die vorhandenen Ausgänge anzeigt, und auf dem man sogar die einzelnen „Gegnersorten“ unterscheiden kann. Alles in allem ist NARC ein Ballerspiel der Oberklasse, das für hartgesottene Actionfans ganz leicht selbst zur Droge werden kann! (mm)

Ever since he saw Nick Ross on Crimewatch, David Wilson has fancied the life of a copper’s nark, dobbing in his chums for financial gain and free plastic surgery. That is why he fancied Ocean’s Narc (the clot).

Narc Amiga review David: As the battle for the Christmas number one slot reaches its climax (as we write), here is another contender from the Ocean stable. It is Narc, the conversion of the Taito coin-op, coded by the Sales Curve team (of Silkworm and SWIV fame). A Narc, as any school boy will inform you, is nothing to do with being a police informant or being peed off. In fact it is American jargon for an officer of the drug squad. Narc – Narcotics, y’see? Okay, but being American and being a computer game, these Narcs go in blasting!

One or two players participate in this multi-level shoot ‘em up against junkies, low-lifes and Mr Bigs of the evil KRAK organisation. Starting with a single shot, you blast your way through the bad guys. Each hit will leave you with money, drugs, bullets or missiles to add to your arsenal.

The ‘stand out’ features of the coin-op were centred on the amount of violence – hit a gang of baddies with a missile and you will be showered with several limbs(!) – and the interaction with the scenery. On a later level you find a Porsche that you can jump into and drive. Meanwhile, a huge helicopter sprite hovers overhead; this too can be blown out of the sky. Both of these elements have been fully recreated in the coin-op and full marks for that.

At the end of the day though, Narc has been spoiled for me by having seen Robocop II first – much better sound, much better animation, more complexity of gameplay. I found myself frustrated by the Narc control system. Dogs especially were a pain to dispose of and when they attack you they seem to be ‘getting off’ with your leg! To kill them you should be squatting down but each time you take a hit your sprite stands up. I also found that some of the later level graphics lacked definition.
Still, Narc has captured much of the excitement of the original. It is an above average example of this style of game but for me it is not the best.

Narc Law enforcement is a joke, and asking for a Coke at your local drugstore has taken on a whole new meaning. With the entire USA in a fix, the people turn to Hit Man and Max Force, two cops with major league firepower. The evil drug organisation, KRAK, and Mr Big are about to be terminated.

Max and Hit are armed with machine guns and rocket launchers to take on the perps, although there are bonus points for making non-lethal arrests. Shoot some bad dudes and they drop extra ammunition, rapid fire power ups, cash or packets of drugs.
Collecting the latter two is good for your end-level bonus, but you only get that when you've found the safe card. Usually this is hidden away in a sub-level, often tougher than the main levels! On the first bad there's a door leading to a subway station sub-level where Rottweilers bite at your heels and perps fire at you all the way. Get the safe card and you've still got to return to the main level and blast your way through to complete it.

After this the slaughter continues on through Krak Street (where Spike Rush throws energy-sapping hypos), the KRAK drugs labs (destroy massive chemical vats), and bridges where helicopter gunships attack and the cops can ride in a red Porsche.
Massacre after massacre follows as the clean up continues through Sunset Strip, ganja plant greenhouses and more before KRAK HQ. There, Max and Hit face wave after wave of every baddie in the game before (literally) the head of the organisation puts in an appearance.

Phil King In both versions, graphic variety and attention to detail is high. Each scene is markedly different – junkyards, bridges and even a greenhouse! All the early levels have their own special perp, but later on you get more of a mix which is a real challenge. Accompanying both versions are ace sound effects: the Amiga dog yelps, voices and rocket effects are horrifyingly Real, the music excellent. The C64 boasts especially good spot effects (the hypo, helicopter whirr and rocket blast). This version also copes well graphically with only a few less sprites than the Amiga. A real technical achievement considering there's a simultaneous two-player mode.
Gameplay is unsophisticated and twelve levels of the same game can get repetitive The ideas are a bit limited, but it's a good blast and that's all it aims to be. The gratuitous violence has been toned down on the C64, with no flying appendages! Mind you, running over perps in the Porsche and blasting Rottweilers sure makes up for this!

Robin Hogg The 0TT effects of the coin-op, with legs and arms flying everywhere make conversion a tricky business, but Sales Curve have the balance about right. The punter-pulling Rotoscope character movement has inevitably been dropped from the Amiga. Ironically the blocky C64 characters are so well animated they look digitized! - and there's zero flicker.
Twelve levels plus sub-levels, which are complete sections in themselves within the load, and you get one massive challenge. The ideas are a little dated, and the C64 disk version I played had enough lengthy loading to make me wonder about C2Ners, but it's well-structured with big levels. The Amiga game benefits from a fast multiload. And watch out for the scanner scenes before each level: they're great on the Amiga but on the C64 it's marvellous to see it matching the coin-op in graphic detail, complete with the portrait rapidly expanding in size. All in all, two incredibly playable conversions.
